Would-be Leaf powers Flyers
Oh, the poetry of it all…
Just last week Tomas Kaberle acknowledged that his no-trade clause would be waived if Toronto made it clear they didn’t want him any more. I guess when Cliff Fletcher came to him last year at the trade deadline and said “hey, we don’t want you any more”, he didn’t get it. He gets it now I’m sure because in a few short months his no-trade clause goes to crap and he can be traded to anyone Clif Fletcher feels like trading him to. Better he get woth a contender than one of the bottom-dwellers looking to unload their sole start player.
The deal Fletcher had in place last year would have seen Kaberle go to the Philadelphia Flyers in return for ==gulp== Jeff Carter and a first round draft pick. Fitting then that it was Jeff Carter who, with this league-leading 28th and 29th goals, powered the Flyers past the Leafs last night. No wonder then that Kaberle’s game has gone to crap. If he’s trying to lower his trade value to make it less attractive for Fletcher to pawn him off, good job. Good job.
So how are those no-trade clauses working out for us so far. Nothing for Sundin. Borked trade with Philly that would have brought the goal-scoring leader to Toronto along with a first round pick. Awesome. The legacy of John Ferguson Junior – gifts that keep on giving.
Kubina is in the same spot as Kaberle. If the Leafs don’t make the playoffs this year the no-trade clause goes bye-byes, and the Leafs are free to trade them this off-season – between the entry draft and August 15th.
Will Kaberle waive his no-trade clause?
Bank on it. This spring he’ll go to a contender. This summer he’ll go to the dogs.
